Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)
2003-03-27: MAL 7062, a B727-22C, departed Calgary (YYC) on a cargo flight to Hamilton and shortly after takeoff, the crew advised Edmonton ACC that flaps would not retract. They requested a return to YYC following a fuel dump. The fuel dump began at 0440Z at 9,000 feet ASL 35 NM northeast of YYC and was completed five minutes later at 0445Z. AFF was not requested and MAL 7062 landed safely on Runway 28 at 0504Z. TSB reported that maintenance discovered that the number 5 leading edge flap position switch had failed. An approved by-pass wire was installed and the a/c released for service. Newer flap position switches on this model a/c are to be installed later this spring. Eight thousand pounds of fuel was dumped during the turnback.
2003-03-28: UPDATE TSB reported that the Morningstar Air Express Inc. Boeing 727-100, C-FBWG, had departed Calgary for Hamilton when during flap retraction from 5° to 2°, the #5 leading edge flap would not retract. The crew elected to return to Calgary, dumped 8000 pounds of fuel, and landed uneventfully approximately 40 minutes after takeoff. Maintenance discovered the #5 leading edge flap position switch to be unserviceable. A bypass wire (part # B27-009-01) was installed as per engineering order 7-2780-7-3312 and the aircraft departed. A replacement switch was installed the next day.
