2003-03-27: The crew of PLR 507, a BAe 31 with 2 crew and 6 passengers, was on approach at Yellowknife when they reported possible gear problems. Subsequently, they reported that the gear was indicating down but there were possible hydraulic problems. After a second go around, the crew declared an emergency. The flight landed safely a short time later on Runway 33 at 1535Z. ERS was advised. TSB reported that the crew observed a red light for the left main gear after the gear was selected down. They followed the QRH procedures, re-cycled the gear and observed 'three green'. After the gear was extended normally, the crew noticed that there was low pressure in the hydraulic system. A fly-by of the Tower was done and it appeared that the gear was down. After landing, the crew saw a leak of hydraulic fluid near the nose gear and maintenance subsequently found a failed nose gear steering actuator o-ring.
2003-03-28: UPDATE TSB reported that the Northwestern Air Lease Ltd. Jetstream 3112, C-FNAF, was operating as PLR 507 from Fort Smith, NT to Yellowknife, NT. When the landing gear was selected down during the approach for Runway 33 in Yellowknife, the crew received one red light for the left main landing gear and a green light for the nose and right main landing gear. The flight crew conducted a missed approach and observed three green lights after cycling the gear on the downwind. An abnormally low hydraulic pressure was also observed by the crew. The crew consulted the QRH checklist, conducted a fly by of the tower, and on the downwind for the final approach declared an emergency with a request for AFF. After shutdown on the ramp, a large hydraulic leak was noticed in the vicinity of the nose gear. Maintenance determined that the nose wheel steering actuator O-ring was damaged. Approximately 4 litres of hydraulic fluid had been lost.
