Incident at Waskada

2003-03-13: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the owner indicated this was the first winter ski operations, with about 12 landing/takeoff events on the axles since they were installed new, two years ago. He will be forwarding pictures and the broken axle to TC. An SDR is being submitted by the AMO carrying out the repairs.
2003-03-12: The ski-equipped Bellanca 7GCBC Citabria was landing at a private snow strip at Waskada, MB after a pipeline patrol flight. Near the end of the landing roll, the right main landing gear axle broke, and the aircraft ground-looped, resulting in damage to one of the propellor blade tips. The loose ski rotated upwards and damaged the right side window and door and dented a small strut at the back of the wing. No other damage was reported. The aircraft had been involved in a similiar incident (A01C0025) two years earlier in which the left main landing gear axle broke. The pilot indicated that he filed an SDR with Transport Canada on that occurrence and will submit a new one with this occurrence. Both axle failures occurred on nearly new axles (purchased from the manufacturer) in near identical locations, between the bolt holes that fasten the axle to the gear leg. Neither occurrence involved a hard landing.
