Incident at MEDICINE HAT AB (CYXH) (Electrical problem, Aerodrome - visual aids)


2003-03-03: When the lights for Runway 03/21 at Medicine Hat were turned on prior to the arrival of BXH 353, the edge lights were inoperative. BXH 353 landed on Runway 09/27 without further incident at 0717Z. The edge lights on Runway 03/21 had operated normally for the arrival of a previous a/c, GLR 7259, at 0628Z. Airport staff were investigating the lighting problem
2003-03-06: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that APM for Medicine Hat Airport advised that the malfunction was caused due to water freezing in the transformer pulpit. Apparently, some connections were not properly sealed and when the water froze, the connections seperated. Lights were serviceable at 1800 hours local time on March 3, 2003. A NOTAM was issued. All connections will be assessed this spring and repairs made as necessary.
