Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)

Summary

2003-02-05: An A319 operating as ACA 0542 was en route from San Francisco to Calgary at a cruising altitude of FL 390. The flight encountered strong mountain wave activity and accelerated past Vmo/Mmo and into the high speed protection mode (approximately 265 kts indicated airspeed). The aircraft climbed to approximately FL 394 in the speed protection mode before the speed started to reduce. A speed of .76 Mach was selected, the autopilot re-engaged and the flight descended back to FL 390.
