Incident at THOMPSON MB (CYTH)

Summary

2003-01-30: At 1037Z, 2 minutes after departing from Runway 23 at Thompson, the pilot of SGK 811, a Cessna 421 medevac, advised he was returning due to a 'shudder'. ERS was on standby as the a/c landed safely at 1040Z. After landing, the pilot advised FSS he had shut down the starboard engine as a precautionary measure.
2003-02-03: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that an inspection of the aircraft revealed that the 'shower of sparks' {starting vibrator} had an intermittent electrical fault which allowed the unit to disrupt the engine timing and ignition systems. The aircraft was test flown following replacement without incident.
