Incident at LETHBRIDGE AB (CYQL)
2003-01-27: When 1/2 mile final to Runway 23 at Lethbridge, the instructor and student pilot of the Cessna 150, C-FKNB, advised the FSS that they would be landing on Taxiway C. C-FKNB subsequently landed without incident on Taxiway C. Lethbridge FSS had provided an airport advisory including the active Runway 23. Winds were 230 degrees at 30 - 40 knots. After landing, the pilot advised that he had safety concerns about taxiing in the high winds. Taxiway C is oriented parallel to Runway 23 and the FTU hangar is located on this taxiway. The instructor thought it safer to land there rather than to risk difficulties taxiing in the higher-than-forecast winds. The only safety concern is the potential for vehicles on this taxiway and at Lethbridge, vehicles using Taxiway C are not required to have a radio, but the drivers are required to have an AVOP. Consequently, FSS does not know when vehicles are using the taxiway and FSS staff are unable to give airport advisories with vehicular traffic for any pilots that intend to land there.
