Incident at Gander IFSS

Summary

2003-11-24: RRR9443 in company with 3 (Royal Airforce) Tornados as part of Reservation STORM TRAIL 72/7, in the vicinity of 47N 050W advised Gander IFSS they were unable to continue and required a diversion. They were routed Goose Bay to Destination LPLA - Lajes (Azores). The aircraft requested to direct to Gander. The pilot mistook the communication with IFSS as a clearance and commenced the turn back to Gander before receiving a clearance from ATC. There was Nil traffic for the turn around. The Aircraft subsequently requested and received clearance to proceed to St. John's.
