Incident at DEER LAKE NL (CYDF)


2003-10-14: AT 0222z the Halifax FIC reported to Gander ACC that the Pilot of a VFR PA28 had contacted Halifax by Cell Phone to report VHF communication failure and that he was lost. ACC advised FIC to have flight call Gander on cell phone. At 0225z the Pilot made contact with Gander ACC on cell phone. Aircraft transponder and mode C equiped. Aircraft advised to climb to a higher level maintaining VFR at all times and was given a transponder code. Radar identification was then established at a position 55NM southeast of Deer lake. The aircraft was then given headings to Deer lake and kept on phone as long as possible to ensure the correct tracking. Prior to loosing radar target Gander ACC advised pilot that Deer Lake had runway lights on Max level and would flash on intervals. Last contact from Gander ACC at approx 0300z was to call Deer Lake FSS on cell phone if unable 122.2. At 0310z CGNPC reported to Deer Lake on 122.2 that he had field in sight. The aircraft landed at 0333Z without incident. No VFR or IFR traffic in the area at the time.
