Incident at Gander Oceanic Airspace (Conflict - loss of separation)

Summary

2003-10-06: AAL56 B777-200 enroute Miami to Heathrow entered Gander OCA over OYSTR at 0357Z maintaining 37,000 feet. Flight had been received and acknowledge oceanic clearance ""to expect FL380"". ATC unable to establish contact with flight from 0341Z tO 040Z. AAL56 reported reaching 38,000 feet at 0407Z. Longitudinal separation with slower aircraft N384AA ahead on same track at 37,000 feet reduced to five minutes. required seperation was minimum ten minutes. TSB informed of event via tel/con. TSB Case Closed.
2003-10-08: TSB Update A03A0111: The American Airlines Boeing 777-200, operating as AAL56, entered Gander Oceanic airspace over Oyster at 0557 UTC maintaining FL370. The crew had received and acknowledged an oceanic clearance ""to expect FL380"". Between 0341 UTC and 0404 UTC Gander Area Control Centre was unable to establish contact with the aircraft. At 0407 UTC the crew of AALl56 contacted Gander ACC to report they were established at FL380. During the time that contacting AAL56 was not possible separation was lost between a slower company aircraft, a Boeing 767-300 N384AA. The aircraft was ahead, on the same track, in cruise at FL370. Longitudinal separation had eroded from the required 10 minutes to 5 minutes.
