Incident at Gander Oceanic


2003-08-29: A delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 flight DAL16 was en-route from Kennedy to Charles de Gaulle at FL330 had reported 50N40W at 0155Z and was estimating 51N30W at 0246Z. At 0243Z the B767 declared PAN PAN due smoke in the cockpit and advised it was diverting to LPLA (Lajes, Azores). The aircraft turned right descended to FL280 and advised estimating LPLA at 0400Z. No other traffic was involved.
2003-09-08: TSB Update - Sept 05/03 - A03A0103: DAL16, a Delta Airlines Boeing 767 was en route from New York to Paris at FL330 when, at 0243 UTC, the flight crew declared a PAN PAN due to smoke in the cockpit and advised that they were diverting to Lajes, Azores Islands. The crew turned the aircraft right, descended to FL280 and advised that they were estimating Lajes at 0400 UTC. The aircraft exited Gander oceanic airspace without further incident. While en route to Lajes, the main battery charge circuit breaker was pulled, however, the smoke did not dissipate. The circuit breaker for the forward equipment cooling fan was then pulled and shortly after, the smoke dissipated. The operator will be forwarding information on their findings and the necessary repairs carried out.
