Incident at Gander Oceanic 62N 40W
2003-07-23: The Event is listed as 'Fuel Starvation' because the CADORS entry program does not recognize Minimum or Low Fuel only 'Exhaustion' or 'Starvation'.
2003-07-23: A Cessna 650 N650JB was en route from Keflavik to Narsarsuaq had progressed by 62N 40W at 1333Z at Flight Level 300 and was estimating Narsarsuaq at 1357Z. At 1348 the aircraft requested to divert to Kangerlussuaq/Sundrestromf (BGSF) due to the Narsarsuaq weather. At 1353Z Gander cleared the C650 to descend to FL280 and then to proceed direct to BGSF. At 1403Z the aircraft advised via relay with American Airlines Flight 89 that he was declaring an Emergency due to Minimum Fuel and was proceeding direct to BGSF and climbing to FL380. Gander advised there was other traffic above at levels up to and including FL380. The crew advised they required to climb to conserve fuel and were planning on using TCAS to watch for other traffic. At 1406Z the Cessna reported leaving FL370 then reported level at FL380 at 1411Z. At this time the aircraft was clear to the North of Gander Oceanic and within Reykjavik's area past 6330N.
2003-07-25: TSB - Update - 2003-07-22 - A03A0082: The American registered Cessna 650, N650JB, was en route from Keflavik to Narsarsuaq at FL 300, estimating Narsarsuaq at 1357Z. At 1348 N650JB requested a diversion to Kangerlussuaq /Sondrestromf (BGSF) due to the Narsarsuaq weather. At 1353Z Gander cleared N650JB to descend to FL280 and then to proceed direct to BGSF. At 1403Z N650JB declared an emergency due to Minimum fuel, and advised that they were proceeding direct to BGSF and climbing to FL380. Gander ACC advised N650JB that there was traffic above at levels up to and including FL380. The crew advised that they required the higher FL to conserve fuel and would use TCAS to watch for other traffic. At 1406Z N650JB reported leaving FL370 and then, at 1411Z, level at FL380. At this time the aircraft was clear to the North of Gander Oceanic and was within Reykjavik's control area.
