Incident at Within Boston Center (ATM - other)

2003-06-23: Shamrock104 an Airbus A330 was given a frequency change by Boston Center to call Moncton Center. Shamrock136 also an Airbus A330 who was 150 miles behind Shamrock104 thought he was flight 104 and took the change. Then he called Moncton Center as Shamrock104 and asked to climb to flight level 390. Moncton cleared Shamrock104 who was shown at FL380 to climb to FL390. Shamrock136 who was at FL310 and outside Moncton Center's Radar area but thinking he was Shamrock104 commenced the climb to FL390. Delta flight 30, a B767 was at FL330 and approximately four miles north of Shamrock136 when Shamrock136 climbed through FL330. The Aircraft were separated by 4.4 miles, and set off the conflict alert in Boston Center. The Minimum required spacing is 5 miles. TSB - A03A0068 - More to Follow
2003-07-02: TSB - Update - A03A0068 - 2003-06-30: An A330 Airbus, operating as EIN104, was en route from Boston to Dublin at FL380. EIN104 was given a frequency change by Boston Center to contact Moncton Center. A second A330 company aircraft, operating as EIN136, at FL310 and 150 miles in trail mistook their callsign for EIN104 and changed to the Moncton Centre frequency. The crew of EIN136 contacted Moncton Center, used the callsign EIN104, reported at FL310, and requested a higher altitude. The Moncton Controller did not detect the discrepancy in altitude of the first (real) EIN104 at FL380 and the imposter EIN104 reporting in at FL310. The controller cleared what he thought was EIN104 to FL390 when in fact it was EIN136 on the frequency. EIN136 then commenced the climb from FL310 to FL390. Shortly after the climb clearance was issued the real EIN104 contacted Moncton Center and reported in at FL380. As Moncton Center was sorting out the call signs, the Boston Center conflict alert signalled that EIN136, in the climb to FL390 was in conflict with DAL30, a B767. EIN136 came with 4.4 miles of DAL30 in an area where 5 miles separation is required
