Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)

Summary

2003-04-24: SPR03 a Beech 200 departed Halifax at 0247Z and was bound for St. John's. While climbing through 2500 ft the aircraft declared an emergency and requested a return to Halifax. The aircraft landed uneventfully on Runway 24 at 0304Z with CFR in position. It was later reported to the tower by the crew that they had experienced a fire indication on the left engine. They believed at this point that it may have been an indicator problem. TSB - CASE CLOSED
2003-04-29: TSB Update:A03A0048: C-FIFO, a Beech 200, IFR from Halifax to St. John's, had departed from runway 15 and was climbing through 1500 feet in IMC on runway heading when the pilot noticed the left engine fire light illuminate. The crew immediately advised ATC of the indication, and requested and received vectors for runway 24. ATC alerted the airfield emergency vehicles. The crew confirmed that there were no secondary indications of fire by monitoring the engine instruments, by examining the engine visually, and by training the onboard infrared camera (FLIR) on the engine. As there was no smoke, flames, or heat, the fire indication was assessed to be false. The crew completed an uneventful two-engine ILS landing on runway 24 at Halifax. On approach the fire warning light flickered a few times and upon landing it went out. The false indication was due to a chaffing fire indicator wire.
