2003-04-09: TSB - Update - A03A0041: The Air Canada Airbus 319, call sign ACA618, landed on Runway 29 at St. John's Intl. On roll out, the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, declared an emergency, and requested the assistance of the emergency vehicles. A short time later the pilot advised the tower that they no longer had a problem. The aircraft taxied to the ramp with the emergency vehicles following. Company maintenance reported that the aircraft was inspected and then ground run for thirty minutes without reappearance of smoke or fumes. Runway conditions in St. John's at the time of landing necessitated the use of ice control materials on the runway surface. It is suspected that a combination of water and ice control materials were ingested into the engines as reverse thrust was applied during the landing roll. This residue was picked up in the bleed air plumbing and cycled through the air conditioning system in the form of white vapour. The aircraft was retuned to service.
