Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)

Summary

2003-02-20: TSB Update - 2003/02/11 - A03A0018: While in cruise flight returning to Halifax the cockpit ""BIM"" light (Blade Integrity Monitor) illuminated with a master caution. The crew completed the emergency checklist, and made a radio call to their communications center advising of the situation. The aircraft diverted to Sable Island for a precautionary landing. A post shutdown check confirmed that there was a black BIM indicator on one main rotor blade, indicating that the blade had lost pressure, potentially due to a crack. A second helicopter brought a replacement blade and repair team, then carried the 14 passengers from Sable Island to the mainland. The faulty main rotor blade was replaced, and the aircraft was returned to service. The company has found a crack midway along the spar of the blade.
