Accident at DEER LAKE NL (CYDF)


2003-02-05: At 1857Z a Provincial Airlines SAAB SF340 received a MAYDAY call from a Cessna 188 Agwagon on 122.2 declaring an engine failure and giving coordinates 4902N 5636W. The Information was passed to Gander ACC and Halifax RCC. The SF340 cancelled IFR and proceeded to crash site coordinates. At 1913Z the Pilot of the downed aircraft called the Deer Lake Airport manager on a Satellite Phone with more accurate coordinates 490137.6N 563353.7W. The SF340 located the downed aircraft and reported one person standing outside the aircraft. At 1934Z Halifax RCC requested an AS350D Astar (a Canadian Helicopters aircraft which was doing flight training) to proceed to the site for pickup. At 2010Z the pilot of the helicopter reported at the crash site, the downed pilot was aboard and no injuries sustained. The ELT was secured. At 2036Z the AS350 helicopter landed in Deer Lake. 2003-02-06: TSB Update - A03A0013: N6606Q, a Cessna 188B aircraft being ferried from Canada, was en route from St John's to Goose Bay when the pilot broadcast a MAYDAY on 122.2 declaring an engine failure (Continental IO-520-D) and giving co-ordinates. The pilot then carried out a forced landing in a snow covered bog. The aircraft nosed over during the landing. The MAYDAY was received by SPR 902 which was on a flight from Goose Bay to Deer Lake. SPR 902 cancelled IFR and proceeded to the co-ordinates given by the pilot and located the downed aircraft and reported one person standing outside the aircraft. In the mean time, the pilot contacted the Deer Lake airport manager on satellite phone and provided more accurate co-ordinates. Halifax RCC requested C-FETA, an AS350 helicopter which was on a training flight to proceed to the crash site for pickup. C-FETA arrived at the crash site approximately one hour after the accident and picked up the uninjured pilot and transported him to Deer Lake.
