Accident at FORT LIARD NT (CYJF)


2001-10-18: UPDATE TSB reported that the Piper Navajo Chieftain, C-GIPB, departed Yellowknife at about 2015 local time on an IFR flight to Fort Liard, NT. When the aircraft did not arrive, RCC Trenton was advised. A Hercules SAR aircraft was dispatched. The aircraft position was located by both SARSAT and the Hercules. At about 0830, 16 October, rescue teams arrived on site. The aircraft was located on a gravel bar on the Liard River. Three passengers sustained fatal injuries, and two passengers and the pilot had serious injuries. A TSB team is being dispatched.
2001-10-16: C-GPIB, a Piper Navajo, was on a night IFR flight from Yellowknife to Fort Liard. Another a/c in the area received an activated ELT signal and this was confirmed by SARSAT. Rescue 836, a CC-130 Hercules has been dispatched from CFB Winnipeg. A local helicopter was able to get to the site early this morning. It was snowing heavily and they were waiting for the weather to improve to return to Fort Liard. The crash site was identified as 2 miles west of Fort Liard.
