Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

Summary

2001-09-18: ACA 3965, a B737, departed Runway 31 at Winnipeg at 0141Z and struck a bird moments later. The pilot elected to return to the airport to have maintenance check out the aircraft. The flight was being vectored for a landing on Runway 36 and was 5 miles southwest of the airport when the pilot declared an emergency. ACA 3965 continued the approach and landed safely at 0151Z. Winnipeg Tower treated the incident as a major standby. Stand-down occurred at 0202Z. Subsequent information revealed that a large bird, likely a Canada Goose, had struck the bottom of the cowl on the right hand engine.
2001-09-24: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the Manager of Airfield Services at the airport advised that the strike was believed to have been with a Canada Goose and that it occurred shortly after the aircraft rotated when it had reached approximately 100 feet AGL. The airport has a Wildlife Control program in effect with an officer dedicated to that role. The duty manager, airfield maintenance staff and the Nav Canada tower controllers are also vigilant for hazards such as birds. If observed, screamers and cannons are used to disperse birds immediately. No additional action is considered to be necessary.
