Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC) (Conflict - loss of separation, Alleged Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) infraction)

Summary

2001-08-31: ACA 845, an A340, was cleared for a straight-in approach to Runway 16 at Calgary after a flight from Frankfurt. N111MD, a Beech King Air inbound from Winnipeg, was cleared for an ALOMO 2 approach for Runway 16. The crew of N111MD, in conducting the FMS approach, turned to a heading of approximately 280 degrees to intercept the 340 degree radial of the Calgary VOR. N111MD passed through the 340 radial and continued westbound, without correction. The Controller initiated control action, turning N111MD northbound. The spacing between the two aircraft was reduced to 1.8 NM and 400 feet, in an area where 3 NM or 1,000 feet is required. An operating irregularity occurred when N111MD did not follow the published FMS approach as stated in the IFR clearance.
