Incident at YORKTON MUNI SK (CYQV)

Summary

2001-08-30: WJA 41 was at cruise altitude near Yorkton when a flight attendant smelled smoke near the aft lavatory, which was in use. As the flight attendant was about to knock on the door, a passenger opened the door and returned to his seat. The flight attendant confronted the passenger who admitted smoking in the lavatory and produced the cigarette butt. An inspection of the lavatory found nothing unusual. A short time later smoke was again smelled near the aft lavatory. A second inspection of the lavatory found a smouldering fire in the lavatory trash bin. The fire was extinguished and the lavatory was closed. Police officers met the aircraft on arrival in Winnipeg and issued charges against the passenger under the provisions of the CARs. The lavatory smoke detector alarm did not activate during these events. The smoke detector and alarm were inspected by maintenance and confirmed to be serviceable. The lavatory was also inspected by company maintenance personnel and the aircraft was returned to service.
