Accident at WINNIPEG / ST. ANDREWS MB (CYAV)

Summary

2001-08-30: UPDATE TSB reported that the Rand KR-2 homebuilt was on a local test flight when the pilot observed the engine (modified Subaru auto engine) temperature was high. He advised the Tower he would do a full stop landing. The approach was flown high and fast, the aircraft bounced on landing, and ground-looped during the rollout. The left main landing gear collapsed. The pilot was not injured.
2001-08-27: The pilot of C-GDDA, a Rand KR2 homebuilt, was on a local test flight in the circuit at St. Andrews Airport when the aircraft experienced engine problems and the pilot requested an immediate landing. Smoke was observed coming from the aircraft. The pilot received landing clearance and landed on Runway 22 and the a/c then ground- looped. The left main gear collapsed and the pilot was not injured. It was reported that the engine had only 20 hours since new. TSB will follow up with the pilot.
