2001-08-10: UPDATE TSB reported that the homebuilt Baines E.B.Jenny was on final approach at Red Deer when the pilot heard a ratcheting sound, followed by a racing engine. He reduced power, set up a forced approach and declared an emergency, to which AFF responded. The aircraft encountered tall grass during the forced landing and sustained substantial damage to the landing gear, propellor, cowling, radiator and upper left front wing spar. On disassembly of the propellor speed reduction unit (PSRU), it was discovered that two of the three bolts holding the lower sprocket to the shaft had come loose and the third had then sheared, causing loss of drive continuity. The ratcheting sound is believed to be caused by the loose bolts contacting the front bearing retainer bolts after the third bolt sheared. The pilot/owner intends to incorporate safety wired bolts on the PSRU in order to prevent recurrence of this accident. The builder has utilized a Suzuki automotive S10 engine and the aircraft has flown about 50 hours since manufacture.
2001-08-07: C-GCLU, a homebuilt Baines E.B. Jenny, was arriving at Red Deer on a flight from Lacombe, AB when the engine quit. The aircraft landed short of Runway 16 and overturned. The 2 occupants suffered minor injuries and the aircraft is presumed to have suffered substantial damage.
