Incident at In the vicinity of: LETHBRIDGE AB (CYQL)

Summary

2001-07-26: UPDATE TSB reported that while on descent into Calgary International Airport from Denver, in the vicinity of Lethbridge the United Airlines Airbus A319 encountered clear air turbulence (CAT). Two flight attendants incurred minor injuries when they were thrown to the ceiling and floor of the galley. Paramedics examined both crew members in Calgary and they were able to continue their duties on the return flight to Denver. The aircraft did not sustain any damage. The pilot requested priority ATC service into Calgary. At the time of the occurrence, the aircraft was descending through FL 350 with autopilot engaged, in clear, smooth air. The pilots were using radar to avoid cumulus buildups and the CAT was encountered while passing well clear of the top of a buildup imbedded in the cirrus.
2001-07-23: UAL 1885, an A319, was enroute from Denver to Calgary at FL 350 when the crew advised that severe turbulence was encountered near Lethbridge and one passenger was injured. The pilot requested priority service and landed at YYC at 2252Z without incident. TSB will be contacting the company for more details.
