Incident at WHITEHORSE/ ERIK NIELSEN INTL (CYXY) (Incursion - runway - pedestrian)

2001-07-12: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that a similar incursion occured in June 2001 (see Cadors 2001C0586). Aerodrome Safety contacted the Whitehorse airport manager. Some pedestrians walking from the public aircraft parking to the main terminal (restaurant) crossed the button of Runway 01. A gate is available to exit airside and to access the terminal building via the main entrance, but some people prefer to cut across the runway. The manager installed a small sign prohibiting this practice, and a short term solution will be to install a bigger sign visible from further away. A long term solution is under study by the APM. Education of pilots is in progress and the airport sent a representative to the 99`s (women aviators)convention in Calgary, July 14-15. A large group of 99`s will be landing at Whitehorse this month. Aerodrome Safety will monitor the situation.
2001-07-05: Whitehorse Tower personnel observed 4 pedestrians walking from the private parking area at the end of Runway 19 onto the apron area via the threshold of Runway 01. Less than 10 minutes later, Tower observed 4 pedestrians walking from the apron area to the private parking area via the threshold of Runway 01. It is not known if they were the same individuals as the first occurrence, but there was no impact on operations.
