Accident at VULCAN AB (CFX6) (Aerodrome - runway or taxiway surface condition)

Summary

2001-07-05: UPDATE TSB reported that the Britten-Norman Islander was on a ferry flight from Brooks, AB to Penticton, BC when a vibration developed in the tail of the aircraft. The two pilots made a precautionary landing in a farm field about five miles south of Vulcan AB. During the landing roll, the right main gear struck a rock and was displaced toward the fuselage. Maintenance engineers determined that the vibration was caused by flutter in the rudder/rudder trim mechanism. A push rod control to the rudder trim had disconnected due to loss of a castellated nut fastener. The accident, which occurred on June 29/01, was reported by the Vulcan RCMP, who noticed the aircraft in the field on July 01/01.
2001-07-03: Vulcan RCMP notified Edmonton ACC of an abandoned a/c, VT-DYZ, a Britten-Norman Islander in a field near the town of Vulcan. There is some damage to the landing gear and it appeared that someone had been working on the a/c prior to walking away. This is the same a/c that diverted into CFB Moose Jaw last week with electrical problems (CADORS 2001C0699). The a/c apparently cleared Canada Customs at Iqaluit sometime in the last 2 weeks and the occupants received a 5-day customs clearance to be in Canada while enroute to Seattle. The location of the occupants is presently unknown.
