Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC) (ATM - NAVAIDS/radar)

2001-07-03: The crew of BXH 454-M, a Beech Super King Air enroute from Medicine Hat to Calgary, reported that the aircraft did have any transponder capability, both transponders Mode 3A and C had failed. The Calgary Radar PSR was unserviceable, therefore without the use of primary radar and given that this was a MEDEVAC flight, prioity was given. Other IFR aircraft were held until BXH 454-M transferred control to the control tower at 2236Z. BXH 454-M landed without further incident at 2238Z. There was an air delay for three aircraft a maximum of 8 minutes and a ground delay for one aircraft of 11 minutes.
2001-09-04: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that from reviewing the technical records for C-GXHD, the operator found the reported defect with the transponders. It was reported that both the #1 and #2 transponders were U/S. The initial troubleshooting involved replacing the transponders and a test flight was then completed. The test flight indicated that both transponders were being interrogated by ATC, however were not being picked up on radar. Subsequently, the #1 antenna was replaced, and the next test flight indicated the transponder was working. The operator also had the systems tested during a turn-around in Calgary by Canadian Avionics, and both systems were found operational. The company has requested a pilot report regarding this incident from our flight operations department, and will advise if there is any further information to add.
