Incident at HAY RIVER / MERLYN CARTER AIRPORT NT (CYHY)

Summary

2001-06-29: The pilot of N934TC, a Cessna 185, departed Hay River on Thursday, June 28 on a VFR flight plan to Fort McMurray (YMM) and did not arrive, as per the flight plan. RCC Trenton requested Hay River FSS, Fort McMurray FSS and Edmonton ACC to have traffic along the route look for signs of the missing a/c. A CC-130 Hercules was tasked to search, along with CASARA units from Hay River and Fort McMurray. N934TC showed up at YMM on the morning of Friday, June 29. The pilot explained that he had encountered bad weather enroute and landed on a lake about 65 NM from Hay River and he spent the night there. He apparently was unable to communicate with anyone to advise of his situation. RCC Trenton staff counselled the pilot that had he turned on his ELT, SAR personnel could have located him quickly.
