Accident at MELVILLE MUNI SK (CJV9)

Summary

2001-06-21: UPDATE TSB reported that the Air Tractor AT-301 operated by Airways Aviation, was returning to Melville Municipal airport after spraying a field with herbicide. At about 500 feet AGL, the engine (Pratt & Whitney R-1340) lost power. The terrain ahead of the aircraft was hilly with ditches and bushes. The pilot elected to turn left to a road behind the aircraft. During the turn the aircraft descended and collided with the terrain. The aircraft was substantially damaged and the pilot sustained minor injuries.
2001-06-18: The pilot of C-GZWE, an Air Tractor, had completed a spray run near Melville, SK and was returning to base when the engine lost power. The pilot force-landed in a field and the a/c came to rest inverted. Melville RCMP reported that the aircraft was upside down and substantially damaged. The pilot was the only occupant and had minor injuries that were being treated at the Melville hospital. TSB was advised and they will be looking into the cause of the accident.
