Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

Summary

2001-06-07: CAV 3727, a Saab 340 with 10 people on board, departed Winnipeg (YWG) for The Pas and when the flight was 50 NM northwest of YWG, the crew advised they had a smoke indicator light illuminate for the cargo area. They returned and landed uneventfully at YWG at 1357Z. CFR was not required and no other a/c were affected. Maintenance and Manufacturing added that Saab is aware of the problem with these detectors and detectors of this type must be replaced before the end of this year.
2001-06-14: UPDATE TSB reported that Calm Air Ltd flight 3727 was enroute to The Pas when the cargo smoke detector light illuminated intermittently. The cargo fire extinguisher was activated and the light did not illuminate again. The aircraft returned to Winnipeg for landing, where it was determined that the warning was false.
