Incident at HIGH LEVEL AB (CYOJ)
2001-04-11: While enroute from Edmonton to Zama Lake, the crew of CNK 327, a Metro IV, advised that the windscreen had a crack and they needed to descend. The aircraft was at FL 240 and was given descent to 10,000 feet for pressurization purposes. The crew also advised they wished to divert to High Level. The crew did not declare an emergency and no other traffic was affected. The aircraft landed safely at High Level at 1840Z. TSB later reported that it was the outer pane that cracked and the crew elected to divert to High Level as a precaution. The company will ferry the a/c back to base at Calgary for repair.
2001-04-17: UPDATE TSB reported that while enroute from Edmonton International to Zama Lake, AB at FL 240, the windscreen on the Captain's side suddenly cracked. The crew reduced airspeed and differential pressure and advised ATC of the problem. The crew requested clearance for descent to 10,000 feet, but did not declare an emergency or request priority. The Captain passed flight control to the First Officer and elected to land at High Level, AB. The aircraft landed without incident and ERS was not requested. It was determined that the windscreen crack had damaged the outer pane only. The aircraft was later ferried to Calgary at low altitude and less than 4.0 pressure differential.
