Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

Summary

2001-03-29: UPDATE TSB reported that NWA 754 had just departed Winnipeg and when the landing gear was selected up, the nose gear unsafe light remained illuminated. The crew followed checklist procedures, but were unable to retract the nose gear. They declared an emergency and advised ATC they would return to Winnipeg. The landing gear was extended normally and the nose gear showed down and locked. The aircraft landed at Winnipeg without further incident. Maintenance found the lower bushing on the nose gear shock strut was worn beyond limits. The aircraft was ferried to a company maintenance base in the US for repair.
2001-03-26: NWA 754, a DC-9, departed Winnipeg at 1710Z. Several minutes later the crew advised ATC that they were unable to retract the nose gear. They advised they were going to speak to company maintenance but were unable to establish contact. They then declared an emergency but subsequently advised that there was no emergency after being able to lower all gear and receive a ""3 green "" indication. The flight returned to YWG from approximately 25 NM southeast and landed safely at 1734Z. No other traffic was affected. TSB will be contacting the company.
