Incident at EDMONTON CITY CENTRE / BLATCHFORD AB (CYXD)

Summary

2001-03-23: The pilot of the Cessna 172L, C-GBFB, was on a local night flight from Edmonton City Centre (YXD) to Edmonton International Airport when the aircraft target disappeared from radar about nine miles south of YXD. The aircraft was next observed on short final for Runway 30 at YXD. Shortly after, the pilot called City Centre Tower to advise that a total electrical failure had occurred on the aircraft. The aircraft was at the Edmonton City Centre airport for maintenance, during which time the electrical power (battery) was on. During the pre-flight inspection, the taxi out and the take-off, all electrical systems (radios, taxi/landing/navigation lights, transponder, etc) were on. This resulted in a low battery state with the alternator being unable to keep up with the electrical demands. This model Cessna 172 does not have a ""low voltage"" warning light.
