Incident at IQALUIT NU (CYFB)

Summary

2001-03-05: The HS 748 was enroute from Iqaluit (YFB) to Nanisivik and was about 160 miles northwest of YFB when the smoke alarm in a lavatory went off. Smoke was evident in the cabin and the crew went through the electrical fire checklist. The Janitrol heater was turned to cool and the crew decided to return. Company maintenance later determined that the heater was the source of the problem. Maintenance and Manufacturing advised that this was the first flight after the aircraft had been parked outside and exposed to blizzard conditions. It was reported that the aircraft did not have all the blanking plugs installed while the blizzard was in progress. Pre-flight checks did not indicate that there was a problem with snow ingestion, particularly for the air-conditioning system. The flight crew had completed the electrical fire and smoke clearing check list and determined the source of the smoke was neither electrical or related to the Janitrol heater. The smoke/haze was reported as odourless by the cabin crew (nil pax on board). Maintenance checked the inlets again and could not find any snow in the air-conditioning inlets. Heat was applied to the areas as a precaution. The aircraft was subsequently dispatched with no recurrence since the initial problem. The company has re-stated the need for proper cover/plug installation while a/c are parked outside.
