2001-11-23: TSB Update Nov 20, 2001. A01A0141: At about 700 nm east of Gander, the crew of American Airlines 101, an Airbus 300 en route Heathrow to New York, declared an emergency due to an ECAM indication of hot brakes on the left main gear. The crew executed a contingency descent, offsetting 30 miles to the south of track and descending FL 250. The gear doors were opened in an attempt to cool the brakes; however the indicated temperature remained at 410 degrees (F). The crew requested a diversion, and were cleared to Gander. The aircraft was flown to Gander with the gear down. Upon arrival at Gander the aircraft flew by the control tower for a visual inspection of the gear. Tower controllers reported that the gear appeared normal, and the aircraft was landed without further incident. After landing, the ECAM high temperature indications were confirmed to be false. The aircraft was ferried to New York for repair.
2001-11-19: AAL101 A306 enroute London to NewYork declared an emergency due to a high temperature indication in the wheelwell. Pilot offset 30 nm. and descended to FL250 to open Gear doors to cool down. With Gear down, temperature still read 410Farenheit in left main landing gear so the pilot requested diversion to Gander. Aircraft landed Gander at 1559Z. TSB Case Closed with more info to follow.
