Incident at GOOSE BAY NL (CYYR)
2001-09-20: Correction Sept. 20,2001: VIR3 landed in Goose Bay on Sept. 17,2001 instead of Gander.
2001-09-18: VIRS B747 enroute Heathrow to New-York at 35,000 feet, advised Gander that aircraft would have to divert to Gander. No reason provided when requested by Gander Shift Manager and dispatch to call when they became aware of the problem. At 1756Z, Gander OAC cleared VIR3 to 34,000 feet and to Gander. At 1800Z the Gander Shift Manager contacted Virgin dispatch and was informed that a newspaper had been found near VIR3 parking gate and contained information regarding some sort of threat. At 1806Z VIR3 advised ops normal, however,in accordance with company operating procedures, upgraded his status to a MAYDAY. VIR3 landed in Gander at 1907Z. Aircraft was evacuated after landing, and authorities prepared to search the aircraft. TSB Case Closed
2001-09-20: TSB Update : A01A0117: VIRGIN ATLANTIC AIRWAYS flight VIR3, FL350, was flying onrouting (in part) 56140 (1725z), 55!50(1809z), OYSTR (1833z). At approx. 1730z, Virgin dispatch advised Gander ACC that VIR3 would have to divert to CYYR. No reason provided when requested. At 1756z, Gander OAC cleared VIR3 to FL340 and direct CYYR. At 1800z the Gander Shift manager was informed that some sort of threat to the flight had been found. At 1806z, VIR3 advised ops normal, however, in accordance with company operating procedures, upgraded his status to a MAYDAY. VIR3 landed CYYR at 1907z. Aircraft was evacuated after landing using four sets of mobile stairs. The authorities are searching the aircraft.
