Incident at GREATER MONCTON ROMEO LEBLANC INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Summary

2001-08-13: AFR005 on route from KEWR to LFPG in Moncton High Level airspace had flight planned for Fl370 and mach .85 for the oceanic crossing . While on clearance delivery , requested Fl330 and Mach .83 . When Queried why the big difference in his request and flight plan, AFR005 advised having the number 2 engine shutdown . A check with Moncton ACC also confirmed they were not informed nor aware of the engine shutdown .
2001-09-05: TSB Update : A01A0099: AFR005, a B747-400, F-GITF, was en route from Newark to Paris with a flight planned altitude of FL370 and airspeed of Mach .85. The flight crew contacted Gander clearance delivery while in the Moncton FIR and requested FL330 and Mach .83. Gander asked the flight crew to explain the difference between the flight planned and the requested altitude and speed; the crew advised that they had shutdown the number 2 engine (General Electric CF6-80C2B1F). Gander contacted Moncton ACC and were informed that they were also unaware of the engine shutdown. The aircraft exited Canadian airspace without further incident. The BEA of France reported that AFR005 departed Newark with an MEL item ""ENG 2 FIRE LOOP A"". During the climb to FL 370, an ""ENG 2 FIRE LOOP B"" message appeared on the EICAS followed some time later by a ""DET FIRE/OVHT 2"" message. The crew decided to shutdown the engine # 2 due to the fact the fire detection system was unserviceable.
