Incident at GANDER INTL NL (CYQX)
2001-03-20: TSB Update Mar 20, 2001. A01A0025: The Air Canada B767, operating as ACA3041, was en-route from Rome to Toronto at FL350 . A short time after the crew reported by the OYSTR intersection they declared an emergency due to a loud bang, vibrations and a power loss from the #1 engine. The crew secured the engine and advised that they were diverting to Goose Bay. On approach to Goose Bay the crew did not request CFR assistance however, they were standing by. The aircraft landed safely at 1659 AST. Maintenance removed the engine, a General Electric CF6-80, due to a possible internal failure. The engine will be shipped to an overhaul facility in Toronto for a preliminary inspection. It will then be shipped to MTU in Hanover for overhaul/repair; a strip report will be provided to the TSB. ASIS will be updated upon receipt of strip report.
2001-03-19: ACA3041 B767 enroute Rome to Toronto reported by OYSTR intersection where pilot Declared an Emergency. No. 1 engine shutdown and flight was diverted to Goose Bay. Goose Ratcon advised that Air Canada did not ask for any assistance on landing but the AFF was out standing by the runway. ACA3041 landed Goose Bay 1959Z. TSB evaluating.
