Accident at 1.5 Miles East South East of ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

Summary

2001-03-19: TSB Update Mar 14, 2001. A01A0022: The PA-30 departed from the St. John's, NF airport, runway 16, at 04:51 NST for a ferry flight to Sanata Maria. the aircraft was observed on radar at approximately 04:54 climbing through 1,000 feet, then it appeared to turn sharply left before the target was lost. Gander ATC was unable to establish communications, and St. John's FSS was unable to re-establish communications. Halifax RCC was alerted at approximately 05:00. At approximately 05:20 Halifax RCC advised that aircraft wreckage had been found near Quidi Vidi lake approximately 1.5 miles ESE of the airport. The pilot, who was the lone occupant of the aircraft, was fatally injured.

At approximately 0850, Halifax RCC advised that aircraft wreckage had been found near Quidi Vidi lake approximately 1.5 miles ESE of the airport with no survivors.
