Incident at ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

Summary

2001-01-31: LAL8304 B190 enroute Stephenville to St. John´s was cleared to 2100 feet on his downwind leg for a right hand approach to runway 29. At position 7 nautical miles north of the field, the pilot reported ¿Terrain Warning Alert¿ and climbed from 2400 feet to 3400 feet without ATC clearance. Pilot advised ATC immediately. No traffic in his area. Minimum vectoring altitude is 2100 feet for his position. ATC confirmed that his altimeter was set at 2961 and confirmed correct by the aircraft. Aircraft continued his approach and landed safely.
