Accident at LAC AGILE (MASCOUCHE) QC (CSA2)

Summary

TSB reports (A99Q0224) that a Cessna 140, registration C-FJAR, with the pilot as the sole occupant, took off in formation with a Steen Skybolt, registration C-GSIR. The Cessna 140 pilot and the Skybolt pilot had decided to take off in formation, one ahead of the other. The Cessna 140 started its takeoff run first, followed very closely by the Skybolt. During the takeoff run the Cessna 140 had some engine misfires, and the pilot decided to abort the takeoff. He did not declare his intentions on the radio and his friend was surprised. The latter tried to avoid the Cessna by turning left, but contact occurred. The right wing of the Skybolt struck the left wingtip of the Cessna 140, and the aircraft made a ground loop and came to rest in the adjacent ditch. Both aircraft sustained substantial damage but the pilots were uninjured. The incident was not reported by either pilot, but by a Transport Canada inspector who was informed of the situation. TSB contacted the pilots and requested details of the operation.
