Accident at Las Vegas, NV

Summary

2000-01-12: The Cessna 172N (C-GIUX) with two people on board, was enroute from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas. During the approach for landing the pilot encountered variable winds, with gusts of 15-25 knots. He made two attempts to land on runway 12, but was unable to complete a landing. The pilot then switched to runway 25, where his attempt for a landing was also unsuccessful. During this overshoot, the aircraft veered to the right and collided with the airports perimeter fence. It came to rest inverted in the middle of a road. The pilot and passenger sustained serious injuries and the aircraft was substantially damaged. The aircraft and powerplant were inspected on-scene by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector with technical assistance provided by Cessna and Lycoming party participants. No discrepancies were noted.
