Incident at GANDER INTL NL (CYQX)

Summary

2000-03-27: CGGXO C150 pilot reported a rough running engine and may have to land on the TransCanada Highway. Aircraft continued to Gander and landed 2243z with CFR standing by. TSB case closed File # A00A0050 Update: This aircraft had a previous loss of engine power which required an Off-Airport Forced landing on Feb 19/2000. TSB ref # A00A0040. Company Maintenance is examining the engine and suspects that there are problems with the left Magneto. More information will follow when maintenance checks are completed. Update: Maintenance discovered both spark plugs in # 1 cylinder were damaged. Cylinder removed and foreign object damage (FOD) was present on piston top & cylinder head. All intake & exhaust components removed, including carb & air box but no evidence found as to what caused the damage. No parts or hardware missing. Maintenance advised that the winter baffles had been removed approximately 2 weeks earlier, by persons unknown, not by maintenance personnel. Two washers that were known to be used in that installation could not be accounted for and maintenance suspect one could have fallen into the carb heat air inlet scoop, found it's way through the muffler shroud, into the carb air box & into the cylinder. An SDR will be submitted.
