Incident at GANDER INTL NL (CYQX)

Summary

2000-03-23: C-GGXO C150, on a local flight, lost communication following base leg report for runway 22. Aircraft then lost engine power on short final and landed on runway 22 where communication was re-established with tower. Pilot was able to taxi on own power off runway. Update From Maintenance and Manufacturing : Maintenance discovered fuel tanks empty. Records indicate 4.6 hours of operation since last refueling. A/C is equipped with standard tanks good for 4 - 4.5 hours in this type of operation. UPDATE MARCH 17, 2000: TSB file # A00A0046 TSB reported that the aircraft was on a training flight with an instructor and commercial student pilot on board. One and a half hours after take off, the aircraft lost engine power while on final approach to runway 22. At the time of the power loss the student was conducting a side-slip manoeuver to lose excess altitude. The aircraft was landed safely, and the crew pushed the aircraft off the runway. Prior to the flight the fuel tanks were dipped by the student. The student indicated to the instructor that there was "half tanks". The instructor based his calculations for flight on this amount, estimating that there was just over two hours of usable fuel on board. Maintenance discovered fuel tanks empty. Records indicate 4.6 hours of operation since last refueling. A/C is equipped with standard tanks good for 4 - 4.5 hours in this operation.
