Incident at LaRonge, SK

Summary

1999-10-18: The aircraft was enroute to LaRonge on a routine scheduled flight from Wollaston Lake when the pilot advised LaRonge FSS that they were shuting down the left engine due to a chip light illumination in the cockpit. At 2314Z, as a precaution, the crew restarted the engine and landed without further incident at 2319Z. The crew then shut the left engine down again. Company maintenance is in the process of determining why the chip light illuminated. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that AIR SASK 100, A BEECH 99, WAS EN ROUTE FROM COLLINS BAY, SK, TO LA RONGE, WHEN THE LEFT ENGINE CHIP LIGHT CAME ON. THE CREW SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND PROCEEDED TO DESTINATION. THE CREW RE-STARTED THE ENGINE AS A CONTINGENCY FOR LANDING, AND THEN SHUT IT DOWN AGAIN AFTER LANDING. MAINTENANCE FOUND METAL CONTAMINATION IN THE ENGINE'S GEAR BOX. THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REMOVED FOR OVERHAUL. Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the the engine has been removed for shipment to Pratt & Whitney-Montreal.The engine has approximately 3,300 hours since major overhaul. An SDR will be submitted by the company.
