Incident at Regina, SK

Summary

1999-09-24: THE PRIVATE PILOT/OWNER OF A MOONEY M20-F AIRCRAFT, C-GNWK, WAS CONDUCTING NIGHT CIRCUITS AT THE REGINA AIRPORT. AS HE THROTTLED BACK IN THE FLARE FOR LANDING, HE HEARD WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS THE STALL WARNING HORN, FOLLOWED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY BY A GRINDING NOISE. THE PILOT RECOGNIZED THAT THE AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR WAS NOT EXTENDED, HE APPLIED FULL POWER AND CLIMBED AWAY FROM THE RUNWAY. HE ADVISED THE CONTROL TOWER THAT HE HAD REJECTED THE LANDING AND THAT HIS AIRCRAFT MAY HAVE INCURRED DAMAGED. HE COMPLETED A CIRCUIT AND LANDED SAFELY. AFTER LANDING THE PILOT INSPECTED THE AIRCRAFT AND DETERMINED THAT THE EXTENT OF DAMAGE WAS RESTRICTED TO THE TIPS OF THE PROPELLER BLADES. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE NORMALLY SELECTS THE AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR TO THE DOWN SELECTION ON THE DOWN-WIND LEG. HIS ATTENTION MAY HAVE BEEN DRAWN AWAY FROM THIS PROCEDURE AS HE LISTENED TO RADIO TRANSMISSIONS AND WATCHED THE PROGRESS OF AN AIRCRAFT BACKTRACKING ON HIS DESTINATION RUNWAY. OPI - System Safety
