Incident at Lethbridge, AB


2000-01-04: The pilot of C-GVFD, a Cessna 172 (the same a/c as in the previous CADORS), departed Chinook, MT on a VFR flight to Calgary. The a/c was subsequently observed on radar by ATC personnel as being 10 miles west of Pincher Creek at 6,500 feet, which is 40 miles south of course and 700 feet below the Minimum Obstruction Clearance Altitude (MOCA) for that area. Controllers at Edmonton ACC also advised the pilot that weather conditions at Calgary were deteriorating and recommended a diversion to Lethbridge. At this time, the pilot reported flying time to Calgary was one hour and the a/c had 90 minutes of fuel. The pilot landed safely at Lethbridge at 0515Z. OPI - General Aviation UPDATE General Aviation reported that they provided some input to the operator concerning dispatch and flight following procedures.
