Accident at Klondike Highway near Barlow Lake, YT

1999-12-01: The pilot of C-FNCH, a PA-18 Super Cub with one passenger, was on a local VFR flight from Dawson when the engine lost power. He attempted to make a forced landing on the Klondike Highway, but lost control of the a/c and it went off the highway, sustaining substantial damage. The occupants were not injured. The reason for the loss of power is unknown, but the pilot is expected to make a report to the TSB and more details may be available. OPI - Maintenance and Manufacturing UPDATE TSB reported that THE PILOT OF THE PIPER PA-18 WAS CARRYING OUT A LOCAL FLIGHT AND HAD BEEN AIRBORNE FOR ABOUT 1.5 HRS. AFTER CARRYING OUT AN APPROACH AND LANDING AT THE MCQUESTEN RIVER AIRSTRIP THE PILOT CLIMBED TO ABOUT 1 000 FEET AGL AND WAS RETURNING TO DAWSON PARALLELLING THE KLONDIKE HIGHWAY. WHILE IN CRUISE FLIGHT THE ENGINE RPM DROPPED RAPIDLY FROM 2400 TO 1800 AND THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH. THE PILOT APPLIED CARBURETOR HEAT AND THE RPM DROPPED TO 1600. THE PILOT TURNED TOWARD THE HIGHWAY AND SWITCHED FUEL TANKS. IN AN ATTEMPT TO REGAIN SOME RPM THE CARBURETTOR HEAT WAS TURNED OFF, AND THE PILOT CARRIED OUT A DOWN WIND APPROACH TO A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF THE HIGHWAY. AS THE PIPER PA-18 DESCENDED BELOW THE TREES, THE WIND, WHICH WAS ESTIMATED AT 10 KNOTS, BECAME VARIABLE IN DIRECTION. AFTER TRAVELLING FOR ABOUT 300 FEET THE PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND THE AIRCRAFT LEFT THE HIGHWAY AND STRUCK SOME TREES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED. NEITHER OF THE OCCUPANTS WERE INJURED. THE REASON FOR THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION IS UNKNOWN. UPDATE M. & M. reported that the damage was to the wings but the prop did not hit the ground. The wings were subsequently removed and the aircraft was trailered back to the Dawson City Airport. The owner claims that after the accident, the engine was run. It was smooth and developed power, further supporting his suspicions regarding carb ice. The owner is arranging to have repairs done and wants to have a carb temperature indicator installed to give him indications of possible ice formation in the future.
