Incident at 20 NM S of Thompson, MB

Summary

1999-09-14: CAV 2557, a Saab 340, was on descent into Thompson (YTH) after a flight from Winnipeg with 19 people on board. At 2032Z, when the a/c was 20 miles south of YTH, the crew reported a hydraulic problem. The crew observed an unsafe indication for the main gear and were successful in getting a down and locked indication using the alternate gear extension method. At 2052Z, the crew declared an emergency and subsequently landed safely at YTH with the city fire department and the airport emergency vehicle on standby. TSB has been notified and more information will be available. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that THE OPERATOR ADVISED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE SNAG, BUT DID REPLACE THE FOLLOWING SUSPECT UNITS: THE POWER DISTRIBUTION UNIT AND THE HYDRAULIC PUMP.
