Incident at 50 NM NE of Peace River, AB

1999-08-26: CDN 90, a DC-10, was enroute from Vancouver to Heathrow with 250 people on board and was 50 miles east of Peace River when the crew reported that there was a hot spot under the aft galley floor which could not be rectified. The Captain declared an emergency and diverted the flight to Edmonton (YEG), where it landed safely at 0923Z. The crew dumped over 100,000 pounds of fuel during the diversion to YEG. Maintenance examination determined that a flex line in the number 2 pneumatic system failed, allowing hot air to vent into the rear baggage area. The line is being repaired and the a/c will be returned to service soon. OPI - System Safety UPDATE TSB reported that APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR INTO THE FLIGHT FROM VANCOUVER, BC TO LONDON HEATHROW, UK, THE CREW OF THE DOUGLAS DC 10 REPORTED A LOUD NOISE AND A VERY HOT CABIN FLOOR BEHIND SEAT 36A. THE CABIN FLOOR WAS ALMOST TOO HOT TO TOUCH OVER AN AREA OF ABOUT FOUR SQUARE FEET. MAINTENANCE CONTROL WAS CONTACTED AND THE ISOLATION OF THE PNEUMATICS WAS CARRIED OUT. THE FLIGHT DUMPED 124 700 POUNDS OF FUEL AND REQUESTED THAT ERS BE ON STANDBY FOR THE LANDING AT EDMONTON INTL. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. MAINTENANCE DETERMINED THAT A FLEXIBLE PNEUMATIC LINE ON THE NUMBER TWO PNEUMATIC SYSTEM HAD RUPTURED AND WAS ALLOWING THE HOT AIR INTO THE BAGGAGE COMPARTMENT. THE LINE WILL BE REPLACED (25 AUG 99) AND THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED TO SERVICE.
